Quick Summary

Escape is a single player mission using the Gears of War engine that takes place on a mysteriously damaged space vessel.  The ship’s power grids are offline and it is the player’s job to reset all of the power in order to escape the wreckage of the ship.  Players must puzzle their way through the ship’s rooms and corridors while, at the same time, holding off waves of strange creatures that have boarded the ship.   The development time spent on the project was six weeks.

Design Goals

  • Reusing rooms while successfully keeping them interesting and different
  • Focused on merging puzzle-solving elements with Gears of War gameplay
  • Building a believable spaceship environment in Gears of War


Thematically Relevant Assets

In the initial design I had used regular Gears of War assets to decorate the level.  This posed a great challenge since the Gears assets are not very space appropriate.  The results from these assets were not as good as I would have liked.  The level ended up looking more like an industrial building than a space vessel.  Since these assets were not working for the theme and atmosphere that I was aiming for, I decided to borrow and utilize assets from Unreal Tournament 3 by converting the models and rebuilding the materials by hand.  These assets worked perfectly for what I needed (especially the LT packages).
